What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a martial art originated in Brazil. Capoeira is a form of expression that combines fighting, dance, play and acrobatics. In action, it is a dialog and a contest between two actors, or combatants (capoeiristas), who communicate through movement; surrounded by participants who sing and play in a circle (roda) surrounding them.
Behind this martial art lies a philosophy, a lifestyle, where people are given a structure to channel their daily problems, joys, habits and their inner personality out through the art of capoeira.
Brazzo Art Form/Cultural Centre is a space created to promote and develop Afro-Brazilian culture in Canberra through Capoeira and other activities. All the activities aim to develop physical conditioning and fitness whilst at the same time widen the social and cultural mindset. Activities at Brazzo are open to all ages, adults and children. We also develop program for schools.
Marcelo Azevedo Guimarães, known as Master Peixinho, was born in 1947 in Vitória, Espírito Santo.
Master Peixinho is one of the founders of the group Senzala and a reference for all capoeiristas in the world. He is also the master of capoeira and has done the most significant work within the group Senzala.
Master Peixinho was also one of the directors of the First European Meeting that took place in 1987, is one of those responsible for the spread of capoeira abroad and work done on four continents.
Thanks for Master and all his teachings.
Began Capoeira in July 1985 when he was only nine years old, in the city of Vitória/ES, Brazil with Mestre Luis Paulo Grupo Senzala de Capoeira. He was inspired by the philosophy and style of Grupo Senzala.
In May 1996 Mestre Rodriguinho started to attend training sessions at Centro Cultural Senzala de Capoeira directed by Mestre Peixinho in Rio de Janeiro. Soon he was coordinating a branch of the Grupo Senzala in Vitória/ES Brazil which taught the capoeira in schools, kindergartens, clubs and Sports Fitness Centers.
Through capoeira, Mestre Rodriguinho, visited several countries (Portugal, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Serbia, Denmark and Indonesia), running workshops, participating in events and teaching the Brazilian art form.
Mestre Rodriguinho completed his post-graduate studies in Physical Education, specialising in school education and sports, and was recognized as a Capoeira master for Grupo Senzala in 2012.
In 2008, Mestre Rodriguinho moved to Canberra, Australia where he has been teaching capoeira ever since. Whilst in Canberra, he has also been performing for various events. He is very proud to share the Brazilian culture with the Australian Community.
